Overall Curriculum intent
Our curriculum is driven by the need to prepare our children for lifelong learning. We offer a rich and vibrant curriculum which is ambitious for all learners. Through our curriculum, we develop the essential knowledge, skills and understanding which are the building blocks for later life.
Our curriculum encompasses not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but goes beyond the experiences of the classroom to ensure that our children are exposed to the richest and most varied opportunities that we can provide. Our aim is to enrich every child's school experience by creating an environment where they are encouraged to succeed and be the best they can be. At Loudwater School, cultural capital prepares children with the essential knowledge and skills for their future.
The exploration of new skills and experiences enables children to learn, create and succeed. The curriculum is further enhanced by our commitment to promoting our school values which include British Values. Through this, we provide learning experiences which promote confident, self-motivated pupils, eager for lifelong learning.
The aims of our school curriculum are:
- to foster the children’s understanding of themselves as individuals with increasing responsibility for their own learning, how they connect to the past, live in the present and look to the future; encouraging curiosity and a passion to learn.
- to promote an enthusiastic attitude towards learning, so that all children enjoy coming to school and embrace new challenges and possibilities; pushing their own boundaries.
- to enable children to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills; being determined to succeed and becoming independent thinkers and questioners; acquiring a solid basis for lifelong learning.
- to promote our school values which include British values so children take responsibility for themselves and their actions.
- to promote our learning values so that children develop resilience, reciprocity, reflectiveness and resourcefulness.
- to achieve their full potential across the whole curriculum, meeting at least age related expectations and being prepared for the next phase of their education.
- to fulfil all the requirements of the National Curriculum, the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and the Locally Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.
Curriculum Implementation
The curriculum is based on good quality resources. English is taught through quality whole class texts, and Maths is taught through White Rose Maths, with concrete mathematical apparatus available in every lesson. Phonics is taught using Rocket Phonics. We have adapted the curriculum to help reflect and represent the diversity of our pupils. Creativity and teacher expertise is woven into the curriculum and most lessons have an enquiry question to direct the learning. A specialist teacher teaches Spanish.
Each subject area has a subject intent, whole school policy, and an annual action plan which outlines development opportunities and clearly links with the school development plan.
Curriculum Impact
The impact of the curriculum is monitored though triangulation of outcomes: pupil voice, test/data outcomes, planning, monitoring of books and displays, lesson learning walks, discussions with teaching staff, pupils and parents.
Pupils, parents and staff are consistently and regularly consulted about the curriculum and the impact that it has.
The desired outcomes of the curriculum will ensure that pupils are well rounded students, ready to embark on the next phase of their education. They will be equipped with the foundations and skills to achieve success throughout their educational journey. Pupils will understand what their strengths are and will have developed strategies to face their challenges.
